Padding

Which pad, and why it matters

Padding is the cheapest thing you can do to make a rug last. It absorbs the abrasion that would otherwise grind at the foundation, stops the rug creeping, and makes it quieter and softer underfoot.

Felt

Dense fibre padding. The best choice under a heavy hand-knotted rug on any floor, and the one we fit most often.

Felt and rubber

Felt for cushioning with a natural rubber face for grip. What we use for rugs on hard floors that need to stay put.

Low-profile non-slip

For flatweaves, runners and anywhere a thick pad would create a trip edge.

Rug-on-carpet

A firmer pad that stops a rug wandering and rippling over broadloom.

What to avoid

Cheap plastic waffle padding. It breaks down, sticks to floors and can discolour finishes — we have removed a lot of it over the years.

Appraisal

What a written appraisal contains

An appraisal is an in-person inspection followed by a written valuation you can hand to an insurer, an attorney or an estate executor. We do not appraise from photographs, because origin, construction and condition all need to be verified by hand.

The document identifies the rug, states its construction and condition, and gives a valuation with the basis for it stated. That last part is what makes it useful to an insurer.

People most often need one after inheriting a rug, before insuring a collection, when settling an estate, or when deciding whether a damaged rug is worth restoring.

Each appraisal covers

  • Origin and approximate age
  • Construction, fibre and knot count
  • Dimensions and design description
  • Condition, including previous repairs
  • Valuation and the basis for it
  • Photographs of the piece

Fitted at delivery

Cut to size, in your home

Padding is cut to the rug and fitted when we deliver, set back slightly from the edge so it does not show. There is no charge for the fitting, and if we cleaned the rug there is no charge for the delivery either.

If you are having a rug cleaned and it has never had a proper pad, this is the moment to sort it. The rug is already with us and already off the floor.
