The terms
Antique, semi-antique, vintage — what they mean
These words get used loosely in the trade. Here is how we use them.
Antique
Generally a hundred years old or more. Natural dyes, hand-spun wool, and a depth of colour that cannot be manufactured.
Semi-antique
Roughly fifty to a hundred years old. Often the sweet spot — genuinely aged character at a fraction of antique prices.
Vintage
Mid-century onward. Includes overdyed and re-coloured pieces, which are a legitimate craft in their own right.
Tribal
Woven by nomadic and village weavers for their own use rather than for sale. Irregular, highly individual, and the pieces we find hardest to let go of.
Estate
Any of the above, arriving from a household rather than a dealer. Where most genuine surprises come from.
