A hand-knotted rug can hold several pounds of dry soil before it looks dirty. The pile hides it, which is exactly the problem: grit settles down at the foundation, and every footstep grinds it against the knots like sandpaper. By the time a rug looks like it needs cleaning, it has usually been working against itself for a while.
The short answer
- For most homes we recommend professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months. That is more often than people expect, and it is based on what we see when rugs come in.
- Between professional cleanings, vacuum regularly — but slowly, and without a beater bar on the fringe.
What makes it more often
- Pets. Not only accidents; oils from fur bind soil into the pile.
- Children, and anyone who does not take shoes off at the door.
- A rug by an exterior door, under a dining table, or in a main walking path.
- Sand. On the keys this is the single biggest factor — it behaves like glass in the foundation.
- Allergies in the household, since rugs hold what settles out of the air.
What makes it less often
- A rug in a formal room nobody walks through.
- A rug under furniture that covers most of it.
- A household with no pets, no children, and a strict shoes-off rule.
Why vacuuming is not enough
- Vacuuming lifts what is near the surface. It does not reach the soil packed at the base of the pile, and on a dense hand-knotted rug it never will. Full-immersion washing is the only method that flushes it out, which is why the water runs dark long after a rug looks clean.
- It is also why we dust a rug mechanically from both sides before any water touches it.
What to avoid in between
- Steam cleaners and rented carpet machines. They push moisture into a foundation that has no way to dry, and on natural dyes they can cause bleeding.
- Beater bars on fringe. This is the most common cause of fringe damage we repair.
- Letting a spill sit. Blot, never rub, and call before applying anything.
