Area rugs

Area rugs for every room, in every size

An area rug is simply a rug that covers part of a floor rather than all of it — which, in practice, is almost every rug in the gallery. What matters is not the label but whether the size, the fibre and the pattern suit the room you are buying for.

We carry area rugs from roughly 2x3 scatter size up to 12x15 and larger, in hand-knotted wool and silk, hand-tufted wool, and hard-wearing machine-woven blends for rooms that take a beating. Traditional Persian and Oriental patterns, softer transitional designs, and clean modern pieces are all on the floor.

  • Scatter, runner, room-size and oversized, plus round and runner shapes
  • Hand-knotted, hand-tufted and machine-woven constructions
  • Natural dyes and organic fibres, and washable options for busy rooms
  • If the size, colour or pattern is not in the showroom, we will source it
  • Complimentary in-home trial before you commit to anything

Choosing

Getting the size right is most of the job

Living rooms

The common mistake is going too small. As a rule the front legs of every seat should sit on the rug, which usually means 8x10 or 9x12 in a typical Sarasota living room rather than the 5x8 people reach for first.

Dining rooms

Measure the table and add at least 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. An 8x10 suits most six-seat tables; a 9x12 suits eight.

Bedrooms

Either a large rug running under the lower two-thirds of the bed, or a pair of runners either side. Both work; the first feels more generous underfoot on a tile floor.

Living with them

Area rugs in a Florida house

Tile floors, sand, sun and humidity make Sarasota harder on a rug than most places. Direct sun through a west-facing window will fade natural dyes over years, and sand tracked in from the beach works its way to the base of the pile and cuts the fibres from underneath.

None of that is an argument against a good rug — it is an argument for rotating it twice a year, using a proper pad, and having it washed every twelve to eighteen months. All three cost very little next to the rug.

  • Rotate twice a year so wear and fading spread evenly
  • A proper pad stops slipping and takes the abrasion instead of the rug
  • Vacuum the back as well as the front once in a while
  • Professional washing every 12 to 18 months for most homes
